REFRESHMENTS AND DISCUSSIONS AFTERWARDS

When filmmaker Josh Fox is asked to lease his land for drilling, he embarks on a cross-country odyssey uncovering a trail of secrets, lies and contamination. A recently drilled nearby Pennsylvania town reports that residents are able to light their drinking water on fire. This is just one of the many absurd and astonishing revelations of a new country called GASLAND. Part vérité travelogue, part expose, part mystery, part bluegrass banjo meltdown, part showdown.

“How is Hemel in Transition? – part III”
Spurred on by Dee’s tales of recycling with her neighbours in Boxmoor, we decided to try out the idea on the Manor Estate in November 2010. Pinning notices on lamposts, telling others at litter picks, and writing in our residents’ association newsletter, we gradually spread the word. Out of the shadows the recyclers emerged, dropping their cartons at our door. They are juice drinkers, soup sippers, custard consumers – this much their evidence tells us. Thankfully, these mystery visitors are on the whole well behaved, and their cartons arrive rinsed and flattened. Over one year on, our intake has doubled, and we now take two black bin liners full of tetrapaks to the dump at Eastman Way every month. Have our mystery recyclers doubled in number, or are they just consuming twice as much?

“How is Hemel in Transition? – part II”
by Dee Fisher
Here are just some of the things that we’ve done in Boxmoor. I am one of our growing number of HiT’s neighbourhood recyclers. I collect tin foil, tetra pak, batteries, and water cartridges on my doorstep and take them up to the tip. Anyone passing 8 Halwick Close, is welcome to drop off tin foil in the ‘grey’ bin for recycling.

You can do the same at the house of another Boxmoor transitioner, at 65 St John’s Rd and 81 Cowper Rd, where you’ll find bins for foil and tetrapak – but please wash and flatten before you drop it off!

I’ve talked to shops in Boxmoor too. At Parrys Newsagents Boxmoor, Jane is happy to have a collection box for batteries in her shop, so you can drop your batteries off when you pick up your paper. I pick them up from there.

On 18/10/11 I took 14 kgms of batteries up to the tip (10 kgs from Parrys and 4 kgs from my doorstep collection box).

Richard from Boxmoor Framers said, “I recycle where he can rather than put it in landfill sites – I pass off cuts of board on to local schools, and use paper bags instead of plastic bags”.

As my friend Den Hudson once said to her son, “one bottle top on its own might not make a difference but if the whole street collect them – it certainly does”!

How and Why I Started to Re-Make

by Dee Fisher

I wanted something to do in the evenings and I didn’t want to buy any wool, so I thought I’d cut up plastic bags and knit them. This progressed to ribbon, tights, lace, string, anything I could lay my hands on – that wasn’t bought! Then I made a rag doll out of an old quilt that I dyed bright pink (the quilt was destined for the tip but when I enquired ‘Will this go in the earth?’ and back came the reply ‘yes’ – I thought ‘oh no it will not’, came home, washed, dyed it and made something out of it!!)

I also enjoy making envelopes out of magazine covers and have made some for The Rex Cinema and some for Sanuk, the Tea Room at Little Heath Farm.

I have held a couple of workshops, one at The Quaker Meeting House in Old Hemel, The Paper Mill at Apsley and also a few sessions in my kitchen. If you’re interested in future workshops, please get in touch at at remake@hemelintransition.org

Background: For the past two years, HiT has been working with Sunnyside Rural Trust and others, about how to make the best use of this site, previously known as Central Nursery. Sunnyside has now been awarded the contract to provide Dacorum Borough Council with bedding plants, and along with that comes the lease of this amazing site tucked away behind K2 and alongside the canal. Sunnyside will be managing the site in order to deliver this contract and, with the support of a Lottery grant, also a range of community food initiatives, including a shop of local produce (at last an outlet for our bulk purchasing scheme!), training courses and demonstration food beds. Sunnyside has established an Advisory Group of partners, including HiT, and this is our chance to contribute to the site with our own initiatives, and to channel our energies and use this amazing opportunity to get practical about transition.

The Green Tea: The evening will begin with a tour of the site and a discussion of its physical potential, followed by an open forum for you to contribute your ideas, and if you’d like, for you to sign up to volunteer at the site.

Location: Dacorum Central Nursery, Two Waters Road (entrance on minor part of this road, near the K2 Balti House). Phone 07795 236403 on the evening for more directions if needed.

Please note: rough and potentially muddy terrain, so wear sturdy footwear. Children not advised on this occasion. See our website for more details.

Green Drinks and Green Tea join forces on the 16th June for an evening about climate change

Are you a climate change doubter? Whether you like it or not or believe it or not the climate is once again in the news.

At the end of May it was reported that last year, despite all the talk from our political leaders about the need to reduce carbon emissions, they rose by record amounts with 75% of the increases coming from the developing world, making goods for our consumption. This has prompted some scientists to predict that the average 2 degree centigrade increase in world temperatures is now the best that we can hope for.

There is also news speculation that the weather, from the warm UK spring to tornados in the US is a direct consequence of climate change.

Well, on the Thursday 16th June, as part of the UK Wind Week you have a chance to find out all you need to know on the subject

“Climate Change: Sink or Swim?” – the latest evidence on climate change from the Met Office.
This event is held by renewable energy company RES at Beaufort Court, Kings Langley WD4 8LR. The talk will be preceded by guided tours of the low-carbon head office of RES from 6pm. RES advises that booking is highly recommended for this event to guarantee your seat, as places are limited. To book your ticket (£3), please go to http://www.beaufortcourt.com/wind-week-activities.aspx or if you have no internet access, phone 01923 299300. Or if you would prefer then e mail us with your details and we will book on your behalf.

After the talk HiT supporters are going to migrate to the Rose and Crown on Kings Langley High St for a Green Drinks to continue the discussions. We hope to see you there. Please remember that there will be no Green Drinks next Tuesday,

Green drinks to find a new home.
When the acting editor’s only reason to go to the Green Drinks is to watch the football on the TV (It was Real Madrid v Barcelona last time) its time to find a better venue.
We want to make the Green Drinks event more broadly appealing and accessible so we have decided to ask you if you have a preference on where and when we meet. We have thought of four possible venues:
* Boxmoor Hall, Boxmoor
* Indy Jax, Hemel Marlowes http://www.indyjax.co.uk/ – arty music cafe (On a quiet night)
* Woodys, Apsley Lock (On a quiet night)
* The Steam Coach, Boxmoor
Please tell us what venue your prefer and what day suits you.

Future Events

18-26 June: Bike Week. - There will be a Summer Solstice ride on 21st June, from the Three Horseshoes at Bourne End to the Valiant Trooper Aldbury via Ivinghoe Beacon. More info on the Bike Week website

9-10th July: Music on the Moor - Hemel in Transition is teaming up with Transition Towns in Berkhamsted and Tring to put on a big Transition presence at this fantastic biannual event. We hope to have attractions covering local food, energy, creative textile re-use with games, competitions and more. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED for both days though have agreed with Tring in Transition and TT Berkhamsted that we concentrate our resources on Sunday to make it a really fun day… please contact Jason Williams on 07894 458808 if you want to help.

Sat 16 July: HiT picnic in the evening, at a private garden location in Boxmoor, with country dancing. Please email us if you would like to attend.
