How to knit a plastic bag out of plastic bags!
Cut plastic bags into strips
Wind into balls
If plastic is strong cut thinner strips
If plastic is pliable, cut and fold in half
To cut plastic – either do
o one continuous strip or
o cut into bands, loop together like you would a string of
elastic bands
o Cast on about 30 / 40 stitches
o Keep on going, knotting, changing colour until you’re happy
with size
o Knit 2
o Stitch together – use darning needle
o Can use t-shirt material and crochet sides together
o Or plait a handle
o Or chain stitch handle
o Or contrasting plastic or tape or cord.

Tips on knitting plastic

  • Thick plastic – cut into thinner strips
  • Frozen chip bags – wash in hot soapy water, dry
  • Frozen peas bag – wash, dry, cut into thin strips
  • Charity bags – or thin bags, double up for extra strength
